Grab a Grand competition

The lucky winners in our fantastic cash giveaway are celebrating their windfalls.

Mail readers were given the chance to Grab a Grand by collecting tokens printed in the paper and on our website.

The person with the most points collected for each of the six days walked away with £1,000.

Now the winners are getting ready to splash the cash on all manner of treats including new electrical items and a re-style.

The first winner was David Fisher, of James Reckitt Avenue, east Hull, who celebrated his birthday this week.

The 43-year-old said: “The timing could not have been better. I spent some of the money on the celebrations and had a great time.

“However, I have had a barrage of car repair bills lately and so quite a bit will have to be spent on that.”

The village hall in Skirlaugh is also set to benefit after residents joined forces to collect tokens.

Claire Haughey, who collected the cash on behalf of the village, said: “The hall needs a complete refurbishment and the money will go towards that.

“We did not expect to win and to get £1,000 is fantastic for us. We are all so excited about it and I would like to thank everyone for their efforts.”

The winner on the last day of the competition was Marie D’Arcy, of Leven, who is also donating her winnings to the refurbishment at Skirlaugh Village Hall.

She said: “My sister Helen lives in Skirlaugh and it would be fantastic for people to have somewhere for groups to meet.

“The village needs a focal point and I hope the money will help provide that.”

Another lucky winner was Lynda Holmes, of Sutton, east Hull.

The 53-year-old owns Daisy-Mae florists in Beverley Road, west Hull, and the money will help her business.

She said: “This is my first year of trading and I desperately need a laptop, so that will be my first purchase.

“The rest will go back into the business to help me out. It is such a welcome windfall.”

More technology will be bought by Samantha Challis, who also won £1,000.

The 22-year-old, of Cottingham said: “I have split the winnings with my friend as she helped collect the papers.

“We have both bought an iPod Touch and I plan to treat myself to a new haircut.”

Andy Holmes, of Bransholme, completes the line-up of winners.

The 26-year-old said: “I will use the money to help pay off a few Christmas bills, which are starting to come through.

“I will look at saving the rest and try to use it for a deposit on a holiday, as I did not manage to get away last year.”
