Boy, 12, loses an eye in freak trampoline accident

07:00 - 07-May-2008

TWELVE-YEAR-OLD Daniel Stothard, of Troutsdale Grove, east Hull, has lost an eye in a horrific trampoline accident.

He was playing on his 10ft diameter trampoline in his back garden when one of the springs snapped and flew into his left eye.

He was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery, but the eye could not be saved.

Now Daniel, a big Hull FC fan and keen rugby player himself, will have to have an artificial eye fitted.

But today the youngster vowed to overcome the injury.

He said: “I will be okay and I'll come back from this.

“I'll continue playing rugby. I always look on the bright side.”

His parents said they have drawn strength from Daniel's bravery.

His proud dad Chris said: “Danny's attitude has made it a lot easier for us.

“Because of the way he has gone about things, I have no choice to be strong as well.”

“He was laughing and joking the next day.”

Consultant eye surgeon Colin Vize, of the Hull and East Yorkshire Eye Hospital, said: “The spring ruptured his eye globe and unfortunately caused catastrophic damage.”
