Hanged Hull man 'failed by system'

07:00 - 06-May-2008

THE family of a Hull man who hanged himself at a psychiatric centre claims the system failed him.

Trevor Young, 36, was found hanging from a window in his room at the Humber Centre for Psychiatric Care in Willerby on October 4 last year.

A jury at Hull Coroner's Court returned a narrative verdict.

The centre was exonerated, but questions were raised over the system of observing clients.

In a statement, the family insisted more could have been done to protect Mr Young.

It said: “It has always been our firm belief that had Trevor received the correct help and assistance at significant points in his life we would not be sat here today.

“Unfortunately for Trevor and for us the system failed him.”

While Humber Mental Health Trust, which runs the centre, has sympathy for the family, it insists nothing more could have been done to save Mr Young.

Chief executive David Snowdon said “A thorough review of the circumstances leading up to Trevor's death has been carried out, led by an independent nurse consultant.

“The review found there was no instance of lack of care or competence and nothing could have been done to prevent his death.

“Trevor had shown no signs of being at risk from suicide.

“He was observed hourly in line with practice guidelines and had taken steps to make it look like he was asleep in bed.”

Mr Young had been at the centre in Willerby on two occasions spanning seven years and was initially detained under the Mental Health Act.
