A SCHOOL for disabled children in Hull is counting on your vote to help it win £50,000.

Frederick Holmes School in Inglemire Lane, north Hull, is hoping to be awarded a share of the People's Millions, a joint venture between the Big Lottery Fund and ITV.

The specialist education centre, which helps children suffering from a range of disabilities, including cystic fibrosis and cerebral palsy, will appear in a short film on ITV regional news at 6pm on November 26.

The school is going head-to-head with the Lister Community Adventure Playground in Bradford, whose video will also be shown that evening. Both schools are competing for the public vote to secure the funding.

Rachel Russell, a teaching assistant at Frederick Holmes, drew up the original bid in June and had to pass through several application stages, explaining how Frederick Holmes would use the cash.

She said: "We really hope people from the area will support us because it's the kids that will benefit from this."

The school was selected from thousands of entrants to make the final eight.

Rachel said: "We're planning a Freddie's Snoozle room for the kids.

"It will have a waterbed and massive cushions and loads of sensory equipment so the kids can relax and play safely in there.

"A lot of the children who come here in wheelchairs don't have the chance to get out of their chair between getting up in the morning and going to bed at night. This room will be a place they can do that safely."

Ms Russell was told the school had reached the final eight in October. Since then, the staff and children have been preparing their television appeal.

Rachel said: "It was great when we found out. I was over the moon. Now it's become a kind of a joint effort for everyone at the school – we've been making posters and things."
