Frank Southward of Hornsea on why the Floral Hall must be rebuilt on a different site

Regardless of what future purpose the existing Floral Hall site is eventually used for, the East Riding Council cabinet has chosen the most logical and suitable place to build this new community entertainment, leisure facility.

The new building is going to cost several million pounds. The only way such a large investment can be justified is for this to be built in the central sea front area where it can be seen and accessed by more people.

There is nearby parking for more than 200 vehicles, administration will be more economical and security should be easy to maintain.

The old Floral Hall is in an area that has seen better days. The site is out of the way and not easily reached. There is very limited parking, indeed there is only hard standing provision for 30 cars, but for normal weekly use this has been adequate.

The area was part of a "grand scheme" that had considerable potential about a century ago.

The Second World War, loss of the railway and a changed economy, probably put paid to any further realistic development.

One can understand and sympathise with the anxiety and concern being felt by the principle protagonist against any change, after all his property overlooks the existing Floral Hall site. He has had to live with this worry for a long time. However, I don't think he or any other residents should worry.

It is most unlikely their view will be lost or the area will become unsightly. On the contrary, the likelihood is that removal of that ugly building will immediately improve the area and their property values.

The reluctance of the short-sighted town council and their domination of "Let's Go Hornsea" who together are always screaming "foul" is likely to have already done a great deal of harm.

Their intransigence could result in Yorkshire-Forward thinking twice about how much money Hornsea truly merits for its new hall facility.

The present economic situation and the belligerent attitude taken by our Town Council could leave the funding for the new hall short by a couple of million pounds.

It is time the council stopped messing about. We, the people of Hornsea, need the best for our town. We do not want a cheaper, "smaller facility".

It is time for "The Hornsea Awkward Brigade" to stop messing about!
