LABOUR leader Steve Brady has ridiculed Lib Dem comparisons with the Derek Hatton era at Liverpool City Council in the 1980s, when Labour councillors clashed with the then Conservative Government.

Hatton was the council's high-profile deputy and also a member of Militant.

Speaking at a full council meeting, Coucillor Brady said: "History will tell you that the experiment Derek Hatton tried was a complete failure

"Anyone following examples like that will not get very far. It is an illegal act not to set a balanced budget.

"That is the position of the Labour party. We will set a balanced budget.

"All groups have varying opinions within them and I always welcome the views expressed at group meetings.

"Everybody has a right to opinions but in the end you have to set a legal budget and that is what we will do."

“I can't wait to see the Lib-Dems budget with no cuts, they have even said they won't charge the council tax to the unemployed
