    “Roo11,

I am sure she wasnt playing in the road but she was playing on the street (i presume the path) next to the road, with a ball, with friends.
IF it is a fact that drivers speed down here all the time then is it really such a great idea that you let children play around there unsupervised?? Given that you already know the dangers of people speeding and are already aware of how fast drivers constantly drive down and around here, I am sure parents wouldnt take the risk in the first place, would they???
It sounds much more like ball shoots out and child follows forgetting they are on a road, driver has incrediby little or no time at all to react and is therefore blameless. Accident's do happen and this is a classic case, the driver's not at fault here. No need to play the blame game, it just happens and unfortunately this child has come away with injuries in this case, as has the drivers life been effected.”

“When my daughter was 8 she was also knocked down by a car, badly breaking her leg. And i was forever warning her of the dangers when crossing roads and even though she wasn't allowed to cross the road without an adult present I still made sure she knew the safe way of crossing and then one day when no adults were there - she walked out between 2 parked cars without looking properly and was hit by a learner driver thankfully driving very slow. It was a shocking time for everyone involved. I even rang the lady who was driving to apologise and not to blame herself for what happened.
    Terrible times indeed.
I really hope this little girl makes a full recovery.”

“As much as I agree with gavmondo and butler11craig with regards the school playing an active role in educating the kids around road safety lets not let that detract from the very real fact that this is an area that any responsible parent should be taking a keen and hands on approach with, surely they can't value anything in life more than that of their children.”

“i agree the drivers are not always to blame my son plays out down there and i have told him always to be careful when crossing the road there is loads of kids that come out on scooters without even looking think the parents should educate the children or as @gavmondo says schools should get someone in to talk to them about the consequences it could have on them not looking.”

“hope the child makes a full recovery. Maybe our local traffic cops could use this to target the Schools as soon as the kids are back. im not blaming the driver nor the child at this point as i dont know the full facts but i know from my own street the kids come flying out of passageways on thier little scooters strait into the road and only my vigilance as prevented me for running them down. Problem is you dare say anything the parents you get nothing but abuse. anyway's there is a couple of starting points.”

“I'm not saying the driver is at blame here. I'm just making a general statement about co-existing on roads.

Most residential streets, off main roads, are what 100m long or so on average. Cutting speed to a crawl isn't going to impact anyone's journey time.”

“Seems that people not aware of the full facts/details of the incident are very quick to judge.
People can go on and on about killing speed but who is saying that the driver was actually driving within the speed limit on the road and a child runs out between parked cars (as mentioned in a previous post it's a busy street for parked cars) at the very last second given the driver no time to react - technically making it the childs fault? I know for a fact the childs parents were not present at the time of the accident although at 8 years old they may have believed that their child is sensible enough and 'aware of the dangers of roads' to be able to play unsupervised on a street.
All the same I obviously wish a speedy recovery to the child - just dont be so quick to judge as the driver is also a victim here, althought not physically.”

“There's no reason why, in a residential area, children and cars can't co-exist on the street's roads. It's not like there are a lot of places for them to play close to their homes. Kill your speed, not a child, as the campaign went...”

“YES PEOPLE DO DRIVE DOWN THERE TOO FAST.
ALSO KIDS WITH FOOTBALLS AND SCOOTERS PLAYING IN THE ROAD.
IVE LIVED DOWN THERE YRS AND THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE WHO LET THERE YOUNG CHILDREN PLAY ON THE ROAD IS UNACCEPTABLE.
WISH THE CHILD A FULL RECOVERY”
