A BEAUTY therapist is still fighting to receive several hundred pounds in unpaid wages despite winning a court case against her former employer.

Emma Inglis, 26, started working for Scissor Lounge in Chanterlands Avenue, west Hull, in February last year but was never paid before she suddenly lost her job in March.

Miss Inglis worked as a beauty therapist at the salon and even had to bring in her own products.

During her time at Scissor Lounge, Emma was only paid £100 in cash and never received any other payment.

After repeatedly trying to contact the owner to get her wages, Emma eventually took the company to an employment tribunal and won by default of judgement.

Emma, of Sutton, said: "I am not malicious, I just wanted my wages.

"I did all I could to help a new business but I feel I was taken advantage of.

"I can't afford to lose my wages and, despite following the law, taking her to court and winning my case, I am still out of pocket.

"Why am I still a victim?"

Conciliation service Acas tried to get in touch with the owner of Scissor Lounge on several occasions but with no success.

She did not reply to the court letters sent to her, resulting in the default judgement in Miss Inglis's favour.

Miss Inglis said: "Despite being instructed to pay, she still refused to do so.

"What frustrates me is that she avoided paying me until she shut down the business.

"The premises were cleared of all assets so the bailiffs cannot recover my wages.

"With the owner not having declared herself bankrupt, there's nothing stopping her doing this again."

Miss Inglis admits the experience has left her with a sense of mistrust.

She said: "The owner has taken advantage of my hard-working nature and it has made it very hard for me to trust people.

"If it hadn't been for the support from my mum and dad and friends, I wouldn't know what to do.

"The one thing that really upsets me is that when I ran out of money, my grandma offered to give me a loan, saying she didn't want the money back until I received my wages. She died in August so I never had the chance to pay her back."

The Mail contacted the owner of Scissor Lounge who declined to comment but did say the company is in the process of insolvency.

In the judgement following the employment tribunal, the owner of Scissor Lounge was ordered to pay Miss Inglis £587.04 in unpaid wages and £127.68 in damages for breach of contract.

A sum of £100 was also ordered to be paid for expenses, meaning the owner of Scissor Lounge owes Miss Inglis £814.72 in total.

“Emma is not the only girl that is owed money, two other former employees of Scissor Lounge are also owed a lot of money after winning their court action, but are still awaiting payment.”

“Get the Sheriffs in (High Court Enforcement Officers) only costs £60 court fee to go to the High Court for enforcement. Fees and costs are paid by the debtor. Best to check the ins and outs by phoning them - but could be worth it to get the money owed. Telephone: 0845 688 9757. Good luck.”

“There's probably a good reason that they did not name Kesia Mattinson.”

“The problem is it's registered as a Limited Company which means the directors have limited liability & the claim is brought against the 'company' itself. Obviously if the company has no assets & particularly if it is wound up there is little to no chance of getting anything other than the statutory payment from the DWP for loss of wages.”

“Why can't the bailiffs go to her home and get contents from there? Why should the worker be out of pocket like this. If it was the other way round and Emma Inglis owed her money the business owner would have called the police. Its disgraceful.”

“Why doesn't the HDM name the director of Scissor Lounge? It's a matter of public record http://tinyurl.com/b2leffd
