More streets in Hull's Old Town could be closed to traffic at night in a bid to make the area more attractive to visitors.

A pilot scheme carried out in Lowgate on three successive Saturday nights last October was backed by pedestrians but received a mixed reaction from local businesses.

Similar measures were recently applied to Trinity House Lane for a six-month period which ended last month.

Now city councillors will consider other streets in the area as well as exploring whether some of the temporary evening closures could be made permanent.

“I live in old town and it I pay the local council for a parking permit, There are not many parking spaces in old town as it is and if they shut roads down at night this means that there will be even less. People that live in old town need to use their cars and if the roads are closed you end up having to argue with people so you can move your car. The council should sort out the roads and the traffic lights that are out of time with other junctions and the state of the road's that are fixed by 2nd rate company's that the council still use. The new bridge that should have been finished a year ago and still not finished, Do some of these things and that might bring more people into Hull. Hull council are the ones that are a joke trying to make it safer for Drunk Kn*b heads that can't hold their drink and cross a road. Maybe we should close roads off outside these councillors houses over a week end and see how they like it.”

“I pay road tax so I can legally use our road system. I can see the point when a road is closed for repairs or an emergency but when its closed off simply so drunks can stagger and spew on it seems to be taking the pee.
The city councillors who thought this up,trying to justify their position no doubt, must be p@ssheads themselves to want this, and its a pity they haven't got more important issues to discuss.”

“Ooooo yeh, let us do this, such a fab idea, we will close off a few more road's and the people will come flocking - NOT
Who are the Herbert's who come up with this ideas? Is it the same ones who decided to allow a motorway (Castle Street) to blaze through our city centre?
The sooner the old Labour/trade union cronies of our city council are gone, the better chance we may have of actually making Hull a better place to live in. Their hypocrisy is so consistent it makes my blood, bloody curdle!”

“Reading this artical makes me laugh! Hull city council trying to encourage more visitors to the old town area, Anyone coming to visit hull for a start will find it a hard task if they are coming down the A63 as most of the information signs are mostly or nearly overgrown with bushes or vegetation! Anyone coming off the A63 east bound at st andrews onto brighton street will be baffled in which direction to go as the sign on brighton street is completly overgrown with bushes!

I cant work hull city council out! One minute they are investing money trying to bring a green energy company to hull, As well as trying to attract other outside businesses to invest in this city, As well trying to attract tourists to the city with the A63 been as bad as it is, to navigate into the city”

“I experienced one night where lowgate was closed. Utterly pointless the place was dead. All because some idiots can't handle their drink and cross a road like a civilised human being.”
