Start looking now for the right venue. There are many options to choose from, but the pick of the bunch will soon get snapped up.
Make sure the venue will be suitable for most of your party-goers. If the majority are elderly, they might not appreciate a disco-cum-nightclub setting, while for more boisterous young colleagues, a sedate Victorian tearoom could be a definite no-no.
Visit the venue before confirming any booking, taking a digital camera with you. Does it have the facilities and entertainment you need? Is it easy to get to and not too far from where people live?
Set the party date after choosing the venue. Thursdays and Fridays tend to be popular nights, so you might get a better deal for a Monday or a Tuesday.
Some guests might want to stay overnight rather than drive home in the early hours. So is accommodation available, either at the venue itself or nearby?
Ensure your chosen venue has a helpful and efficient manager and staff ready to help your guests to relax and enjoy themselves.
Choose a venue that can meet as many of your needs as possible, such as catering, cloakrooms, furniture and tableware – fewer suppliers will make the management of the event much easier.
Choose the right size of venue for your needs. If your numbers are small, don't lose them in a cavernous setting; or if you have many guests, don't crush them into somewhere too small.
Transport after the party – whether coaches, cars or taxis – is vitally important, so make sure you don't overlook your guests' needs.
Pay attention to the detail. It's the small touches, such as a welcome drink on arrival and a Santa who is clearly not someone everyone already knows in costume, that make a Christmas party a memorable event or one best forgotten.
Get all these right and your Christmas party is sure to be a cracker.
