More mystery hum over Hull, or just a jet plane?
What were the loud humming noises heard over Hull last night?
More than 100 people have been speculating over the culprit on our Facebook page.

Daniel Cook snapped a picture of a C17 Globemaster flying low over Hull yesterday. He said: "It was pretty strange to see it so low and with undercarriage down. Figured it had to be on a heading to Kirmington. The evening flights were just Typhoons practising ACM. The low cloud will have acted as a sound reflector, bouncing the waves back down again, after they bounced off the ground."
Louisa Sewell said: "I'm right at the back of Orchard Park. You see a lot of planes and helicopters but they're never around longer then an hour. Last night the noise was from about 7.30 to just before midnight. It was really loud and house kept shaking. Not only that, at about 11.30am I was walking past Shaw Park and what looked like a massive cargo plane came out of the clouds really low. All the kids in the park were frightened and amazed."
Janet Seaman said: "I thought it was a jet but it did go on for some time. It was very loud over Kingswood."

Laura-Christina Stead said: "There were fighter jets going over North Hull at around 11pm last night - the rumbling sound is the mach that last ages before the plane passes over. I live on 21st and see them go over all the time, both at night and during the daylight hours. We're under a few direct flight paths. I don't think they were any louder than they normally are to be honest. I have heard them louder during the early evening."
Sarah Campbell Fox said: "Jets from around 9 until 11.30, also a few people have said they saw a really big, strange-looking plane fly low over city centre yesterday afternoon."
Nick Clark said: "It was jets from the RAF on a training exercise, stop trying to scare people HDM. It occurred at around 7pm then again at approx 10.56pm. It was coming from the west side, Anlaby Road. The sound of a jet can go on for ages, conspiracy theorists are up early today."
Jack Morton said: "It was the Russians!!!!"
Carolyn Stroud said: "Yes, I heard it. Never really noticed it before and I saw a really old-looking and noisy plane fly over yesterday afternoon."
Lee Holderness said: "For it to last that long and be so low over the city it won't have been a practice. Our airforce are scrambled more than 70 times a year - not that we hear about them all."
Helen Ravn said: "We heard it on Wold Road 11-ish. Thought it was thunder to start with then just thought it was a few jets going over. My partner was at the shops and said it was a Galaxy C2 plane, very low down ... but extremely loud!"
James Marshall said: "I saw the Galaxy C2 plane flying over Anlaby yesterday around lunchtime, very low, and it was an amazing sight. Saw it turning, looking like it was flying over Hull and back to the Humber. And I heard the loud noise around 10.30pm-11pm over Swanland, presumed it was the same thing."
Tom McKee said: "I saw a flying saucer land at the back of Kingswood last night ..."
Sharon Blagdon said: "Did it sound like a generator, if you go on YouTube, the same noise has been reported all over the world. ooooooooooooooooooooooooohhhh".

“Sure looks like one of our U.S. C-17 cargo planes. May be big enough to be a C-5, but their engines are louder and whine quite a bit. Nothing to worry about. Our C-17''s are powerful enough to be able to fly as slow as prop planes, but still carry the load and stop on a coin when required. Sorry about the disturbance....Great job with the Olympics ((TM) just to be safe) as you are doing a GREAT job hosting!

“I have been informed today that some sort of veteran aircraft rally was being held at East Park. Can anyone verify this? The plane I saw looked like an old bomber/cargo plane and was flying to slow to be a jet.”

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the sound come after the jet if it's travelling faster than Mach????
Also how can some 'last ages' before it happens? More God HDM, you could have at least edited this!”

“Lordchez: it flew straight over my house. Think it was jet driven. It was so low that I would've seen propellers. Whatever it was, it was an weird sight. Impressive but a definite 'Big Brother' moment - and I don't mean the saddo C5 show for saddo's everywhere.”
