A family of two adults and six young may cons- ume more than 1,000 rodents during the three- month nesting period.

Other names for the barn owl are golden owl, white owl, monkey-faced owl and white-breasted barn owl.

Barn owls eat mainly small mammals such as voles, shrews and mice. Prey is often swallowed whole.

They have remarkably long legs, toes and talons enabling them to catch prey hidden at the base of deep vegetation.

Barn owls hunt at night, and, although they have very good eyesight, they rely mostly on their sense of hearing.
