Appeal for witnesses to fire death

7:00 - 09-May-2008

DETECTIVES are “keeping an open mind” as they look for the cause of a car blaze that killed a Hull man.

Alan Russell, 33, of Walker Street, west Hull, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Hull Royal Infirmary with horrendous injuries on Bank Holiday Monday.

Today, Detective Chief Inspector Sharon Fielding revealed officers are investigating the possibility Mr Russell may have intended to take his own life.

Emergency services were called to the scene, opposite a skate park, off Livingstone Road, in Hessle, at 2.30pm after reports a silver Vauxhall Astra was on fire.

DCI Fielding stressed the investigation is being hampered by the fact crucial evidence may have been destroyed by the flames.

The senior detective revealed detectives are speaking to Mr Russell's family in a bid to piece together his final movements.

She said: “At this moment in time, there is nothing to suggest anybody else was involved in this incident, but we are keeping an open mind.

“We are speaking to the family. It is very difficult, especially when these people have lost a family member in such a horrific way.

A post-mortem examination has not been carried out.

Anyone with any information about the blaze is asked to contact Humberside Police on 0845 6060222.
