Calls for Whitefriargate regeneration

07:00 - 01-May-2008

HULL Civic Society is appealing for Whitefriargate to be regenerated amid fears businesses are losing out.

According to the organisation, the city centre thoroughfare is suffering due to shoppers spending money in the Princes Quay and St Stephen's shopping centres.

The society is now calling for debate on the future of the street, which it believes could become the future “entertainment district” of the city.

Colin McNicol, committee member at the civic society, said it was clear the area should be re-invented.

He said major retailers on the street could be encouraged to relocate into the Quay West development, leaving the area free to host a variety of restaurants, bars and live music venues, all anchored with a new casino.

Mr McNicol said: “With aggressive marketing and generous incentives, new businesses to Hull might be attracted to open up in the street, such as a TGiFriday, a Hard Rock Cafe, an Outback Steakhouse, etc.

“Whitefriargate could become a vibrant, colourful, distinctive and attractive corridor within the city centre that would encourage tourism and link the old with the new.”

John Holmes, chief executive of regeneration company Hull Forward, said Whitefriargate had been identified as a future strategic development area.

He said: “We are about to commission a development brief looking at what options are available for Whitefriargate.”

Should Whitefriargate be turned into an area for restaurants, cafes and music venues?
