Firefighters investigating blaze that gutted row of six Bransholme houses
8:00 - 09-May-2008
No one was injured as the fire took hold shortly after 7pm yesterday in Davidstow Close, as first reported on the Mail's website last night.
Fire investigators and police detectives have launched a full inquiry into the incident.
Father of two Sam Hobson lives next door to the house where the fire is thought to have started with his partner and children.
He said: “Our lass said 'can you smell smoke?' and went to bring the washing in.
“When she went in the back garden she saw all the smoke and flames.
“We just got everyone out and then we just stood there watching it.”
Mr Hobson stayed with a friend who lives nearby last night while his family stayed with other friends further from the scene.
He said: “It's lucky the wind was going the other way or it would've come towards our house. We don't even know what's happening, I spoke to some people from the council about it but they're still waiting to find out if the buildings are structurally sound.”
Glen Ramsden, of Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We did as much as we could last night but we're resuming the fire investigation this morning and working with the police.”
Five crews extinguished the blaze by around 9pm.
Mr Ramsden said: “Most, if not all of the properties along the row will be uninhabitable.”
The fire was spotted by a police officer after being called to a garage fire on nearby Hartland Close.
A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: “We were attending a garage fire and it was then we spotted one of the properties along Davidstow Close ablaze.
“We rang the fire through and then began evacuating everyone from the houses.”
The spokeswoman said all but one of the residents of the council owned properties had been contacted as some were away.
All the residents affected secured temporary accommodation with friends or family.
Detectives and Humberside Fire and Rescue are jointly investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.
It is thought the blaze started in the middle of the terrace.
Scenes of crime officers have attend the scene and house to house inquiries have taken place.
The block of properties today remained cordoned off and was awaiting assessment by a structural engineer.
A police spokesman said: “Inquiries are on going to identify the cause of the fire which is being treated as suspicious at this stage.”
Anyone with any information about the fire should call Humberside Police on 0845 6060222 quoting log 616 of Thursday 8 may 2008 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
