Monday, February 08, 2010, 07:50

Work is beginning today to lay new gas pipes in Hull.

In total, almost four miles of old metal piping will be replaced with a plastic version along Cranbrook Avenue, Ellerburn Avenue, Greenwood Avenue, Riccall Close, along with 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 15th, 14th, 17th, 19th, 21st, 22nd, and 27th Avenues.

The work is expected to take five months to finish.

Engineers from United Utilities and Morgan Est will carry out the work on behalf of the area's gas pipeline owner, Northern Gas Networks.

The company claim the work will cost £625,000 and will "protect the long-term safety and reliability of north Hull's gas supply".

A United Utilities Customer Liaison Officer will visit the site during the works to ensure that residents are kept up-to-date with progress.

Northern Gas Networks' director Chris Gorman said: "Our new plastic pipes are more durable and flexible and have a lifespan of at least 80 years."
