Golf club is ambulance's new home

7:00 - 09-May-2008

Planners have given the go-ahead for Hull's most unusual ambulance station – in a golf club car park.

But they have also rapped NHS bosses for not allowing part of a neighbouring hospital site to be used instead.

The so-called “ambulance standby point” will be based in a portable cabin in a corner of the Sutton Park gold club in Saltshouse Road, east Hull.

The car park is just yards away from the Princess Royal Hospital site which is expected to be sold when the current hospital facilities relocate to Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham later this year.

The new standby point will feature either a conventional ambulance or a fast response vehicle with a crew using the cabin as a base.

Officials at the Yorkshire Ambulance Service say it will be manned 24 hours a day.

Assistant director estates Mark Squires said: “With the help of new technology we can almost predict where the next emergency call-out is likely to be.

“This part of east Hull is an area where we have consistently struggled to achieve target response times in the past so by having an ambulance base at Sutton Park golf club will improve patient care significantly.”
