Gurkhas to perform at Hull City Hall

GURKHAS training at Leconfield's Defence School of Transport Normandy Barracks are set to be one of the star attractions at a charity Christmas show.

The fearsome Nepalese fighters, who still carry into battle their traditional weapon – an 18-inch long curved knife known as the kukri – will be taking to the Hull City Hall stage.

They will perform a traditional dancing display at Christmas Countdown 2 music show.

Gurkha veterans were recently the subject of a successful, high-profile campaign, led by Joanna Lumley, to win the right to stay in the UK after four years' service.

Event organiser Mally King said he was delighted six of the world-famous soldiers would be performing at the Hull event.

He said: "There's such a warm feeling from the public towards them.

"I go back to serving with the Gurkhas in 1965 in Borneo. Anyone from the Army who has served alongside them will know how good they are and it is brilliant that they will be dancing at our event."

Christmas Countdown 2 will be staged by the Local Entertainers And Performers Society (Leaps) on Wednesday, November 25, to raise funds for three charities.
