Married father and grandfather Stephen Ketley, 52, of Selby Street, west Hull, died at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham in May.
Mr Ketley suffered with lung cancer and died in the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU).
Following his death, consultant anaesthetist Sean Bennett was arrested and questioned under caution about the case.
The Mail understands Mr Bennett was the doctor who took Mr Ketley off the ventilator, which triggered allegations of wrongdoing.
Mr Ketley's family, including his wife Alice Peacock, 48, who he had been with for 33 years, and their daughters Alison, 31, Louise, 22, and granddaughters Shannon, four, and two-year-old Zoe have all paid tribute to him.
It came after Mr Bennett told spoke exclusively with the Mail, saying he did not think he had done anything wrong.
The family said: “Stephen was a loveable rogue, whose family meant everything to him.
“He was a family man and everybody's best friend.
“He adored his family and in particular his grandchildren.
“They and the rest of his family were his entire life and he was the mainstay of this family.
“He won't be around to watch them grow up and the gap he has left is enormous.
“We are devastated by his death.”
As part of the investigation, it is understood police have looked at a number of other deaths at Castle Hill Hospital, where the patient is believed to have passed away.
