Friday, July 03, 2009, 08:36

Former Hull City player Andy Payton has been cautioned by police after 17 cannabis plants were seized in a drugs raid on his home.

Police targeted Payton's address in Burnley after issuing a warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Ex striker Payton, 41, who also played for Burnley, Middlesbrough and Celtic, was not present when officers moved in on his home in the quiet cul-de-sac.

Payton was arrested and received a caution for possessing class B drugs.

A Lancashire Police statement said: "Police in Burnley recovered 17 cannabis plants following a warrant at an address on Mary Towneley Fold.

"A 41-year-old man was subsequently arrested and received a police caution."

Payton played for City between 1986-92, making 166 appearances and scoring 57 goals.

He joined Middlesbrough for £700,000 in November 1991, which remained Hull City's record sale for 15 years.
