Hull Lord Mayor's parade success

07:00 - 05-May-2008

The traditional Lord Mayor's Parade in Hull has taken place, after last year's event had to be cancelled because of the floods.

Around 30,000 people came out for the annual parade.

Baton-twirling majorettes, colourful floats, a brass band, and a time-travelling De Lorean all accompanied the Lord Mayor, Councillor Brenda Petch, as she made her way from West Park to East Park on Saturday.

The floats set off from the Walton Street car park on Saturday, finishing at East Park in time for a gala which lasted into the evening.

Councillor Petch was delighted with the turn-out for the event.

She said: “It's extremely important for the city to have the parade. Hull is a traditional city and it enjoys the traditional things like the Lord Mayor's Parade.

“I was absolutely delighted with the weather, because after the floods we needed that not to happen again.

“I was watching the weather at six in the morning. I was so happy when it said it was going to be sunny and dry.”

Floats from around Hull competed to be named as the mayor's favourite, and after various prizes were handed out the float from Hull Council of Disabled People was pronounced the best dressed at the event.

The float, on the theme of myth and magic, features witches, wizards and even a dragon.

Money raised during the parade will go to Victim Support, the Lord Mayor's chosen charity for this year.
