Hull bar reopens with new name

Saturday, May 17, 2008, 07:00

A notorious Hull bar that was closed down by its owners has reopened after a £60,000 transformation.

Retro Bar in Jameson Street, city centre, closed after nearly 10 years of trading on Tuesday, May 6, after its owners admitted they could not shake off its bad reputation following a catalogue of violent incidents.

The bar has now been transformed inside and out, and, from its opening night last night, only those aged over 21 were allowed inside.

The bar no longer sells cheap lagers and alcopops, will enforce a strict dress code, including no sportswear, and has cut back its opening hours.

Co-owner Chris East said he hoped the reopening of the bar would signal a fresh start.

He said: “I bought this bar two years ago and I wasn't aware of the bad reputation that the bar had built up.

“It had a bad reputation in terms of violence, disorder and we want to put a stop to that, so we decided to close Retro and open Shine. It's our vision for Hull going forward.

“I'm hoping it will attract a different crowd, I want to completely get rid of the old crowd and bring new people into the city centre.

“We are going to be so much stricter on the door and we are only going to let the better people in.”
