He may be only a little boy from Cottingham but he has already hit the big time in the gardening world.

Three-year-old Max Jones has grown a 168 lb (12st) pumpkin at his family's farm.

His fantastic fruit measuring measuring 200cm round and 80cm wide has taken pride of place at Southwood Farm plant nursery and farm shop in Ganton Avenue.

Delighted Max beat his older brother and sister, George, nine, and Lucy, six, in their annual pumpkin growing contest.

But the youngster had no idea what a whopper it would be when he sowed the pumpkin seed in April.

His mum, Jane, 36, said: "Max is really over the moon with his pumpkin and it's the biggest thing that has ever been grown on the farm.

"He is really proud of his achievement and the pumpkin has created a great deal of interest among our visitors.

"It is in the Halloween display and many people think it is plastic because it is so big."
