Minerva pub to pull its last pint
7:00 - 09-May-2008
The Minerva in Nelson Street has been a favourite for many years due to its riverside location and traditional feel.
But the venue's parent company Tattershall Castle Group (TCG) has decided to shut the pub on Sunday, May 25, with the smoking ban and rate rises being partly blamed.
The firm intends to close The Minerva for two years in the hope the imminent £100m Fruit Market development, which will transform the surrounding area with new homes, cafés, restaurants and hotels, will improve flagging business.
Stunned staff at the pub only learned of the closure on Wednesday and have been given just a couple of weeks notice.
Manager Tony Roberts said: “I was totally shocked by the closure news. We would have been celebrating our bicentennial next year.
“It's fair to say the decline of the old Fruit Market, the smoking ban to some extent and the enormous rent and rate bills have impacted on the decision to close The Minerva.
“For any business to run at a loss month-on-month is a disaster.
“The closure of this pub with its brewing and maritime heritage will be a tremendous blow to all who know it.”
No one from TCG was available for comment.
The Minerva is one of the oldest pubs in Hull and is in the Guinness Book Of Records for having the smallest room in a pub with just two seats.
