Police probe mass Hessle brawl

Tuesday, May 06, 2008, 07:00

DETECTIVES are investigating a mass fight outside the Admiral Hawke in Hessle Square.

Police said the incident, which happened just before 7pm on Sunday involving about 70 people and left a man with serious injuries.

One man, who saw the incident unfold but declined to be named, said: “It started off with just two people fighting. Then more started brawling.

“There were about 30 people on each side. I was pretty shocked at how fast it started.

“It went on for about 15 minutes. I saw someone get dropped and kicked in the face by three people. Nearly everyone had blood on their face or shirts.”

A man in his 50s was yesterday being treated in hospital after the incident.

He sustained serious head and facial injuries, but these are not thought to be life-threatening.

Detective Sergeant Gavin Orsborne, from Humberside Police, said: “This was a large incident of public disorder with a lot of people involved. At one point there may have been up to 70 people involved.

“It appears at this stage a minor incident of public disorder escalated very quickly with people jumping in, not knowing what they were joining into.

“Because of the sporting attention that was on the city on Sunday it was clear a lot of people were out and about in pubs.

“Alcohol may have been a contributing factor. There is no indication it was rival sporting factions. We have got officers reviewing CCTV evidence of the incident.”

Officers arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of assault and he was yesterday being questioned by detectives.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call Humberside Police on 0845 6060222.
