Figures released by the Home Office show the number of road traffic collisions involving Humberside Police vehicles has increased by as much as 43 per cent in the past year.
The number of road traffic collisions during immediate emergency response and pursuit has also more than doubled in the space of a year, while casualties resulting from road traffic accidents during immediate emergency response by the force also jumped from 12 in 2005-06 to 19 in 2006-07.
The figures also show there was one death last year.
Shadow Police Reform Minister David Ruffley called for action to revise driver training standards.
He said: “There is an obvious need for a serious review of the matter, and action is required to revise training standards to improve the safety of both the public and the police who do so much to protect us.”
But Humberside Police insist the statistics don't tell the full story.
Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Donald said: “We have recently conducted a study and closely analysed reported accidents and it is apparent more often then not damage is a result of slow manoeuvres, such as reversing as opposed to high speed pursuits.”
Nationally, the number of road traffic accidents only involving police cars has dropped from 19,280 in 2005-06 to 18,208 last year, while the number of accidents involving police cars and non police cars has risen from 10,646 to 10,639 in the space of a year.
