It was a match made in Asda for one Hull couple.

Lance Corporal Steve Bladen, 22, proposed to his girlfriend Tara Moodie, 21, as they were doing their shopping at the store at Kingswood Retail Park, north Hull.

The soldier rang the store ahead of their trip and arranged for the proposal to be made over the loudspeaker, by the "meeter and greeter".

Steve waited until he reached the top of the travelator in the George clothing section, before dropping to one knee and popping the question to his girlfriend of three months, as the announcer made the proposal over the loudspeaker.

Stunned shoppers waited with bated breath before the announcer reporter that she had said yes, to rapturous applause.

The couple are now contemplating having their wedding at the store next May.

An ecstatic Steve, 22, who is based at Grantham but whose family live in Walker Street, west Hull, said: "I was pretty nervous before I did it. When I asked her, she started laughing and her face went red but then she just said yes.

"There are many places I could have done it, but I chose there because I wanted to shout it out in front of hundreds of people that I loved her. I wanted to do it in public."

The logistical driver met Tara, of north Hull, on an online dating website.

He said: "We just got on straight away. I have never met anyone as caring or loving as her. I knew she was the one."

Tara, who is a full-time carer for a family member, said: "I'm still feeling shocked. It's really exciting though. It was really different. I was smitten by it."
