TV project for elderly extended
The service, which offers everything from exercise programmes to crime prevention advice through TV sets, is already available in about 50 homes in the city.
Now Stream IPTV, also known as the Independent Living Campaign, is being expanded, with 250 homes expected to be connected to it by March next year.
Jean Lidgard, 73, was one of the first to be connected to the system in January and says it allows her to maintain her independence.
She said: "I have my own e-mail system in my flat and I can use it straight from my television to keep in touch with friends and family.
"Thankfully, I'm still able to be independent and there's lots of information about community groups, transport and health information.
"Although I like to consider I have a lot of my faculties, it also has a reminder service for things such as hospital appointments – handy every now and then when I have an 'old age' day."
Each resident taking part in the project will receive a digital television set-top box giving them access to Freeview digital television channels.
Using the familiar medium of television, they are also given a broadband connection to plug into their set-top box, with local programmes and services on demand through their TV.
A single button on their remote control handset provides a personalised menu of information and services, tailored to their individual needs.
The service was developed by Broadband Capital, set up and funded by Hull City Council.
Mark Jones, managing director of Broadband Capital, said: "Combining the familiarity of television with the Internet, vulnerable residents can be shown how to access information to services immediately and privately, from the comfort of their own homes.
"It also allows organisations such as Hull City Council to reach out to residents who would have been previously isolated from council services."
The Hull project has already been hailed a success by Government Minister Ivan Lewis, following his visit to Broadband Capital's headquarters in Norwich House, Savile Street, Hull, to watch it in action.
Mr Lewis, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Care Services, said: "Arguably, Hull is leading the way in trying to improve community services. With the innovation I've seen, Hull has the potential to be at the cutting edge in terms of change and reform throughout the country."
