'Use plastic glasses on match days'

Saturday, November 29, 2008, 07:00

More than a dozen pubs around the KC Stadium have been asked by police to serve bottled beer in plastic glasses on Hull City match days.

The request, by letter, comes after violence erupted when West Ham came to play the Tigers in September.

The Mail understands the letter, addressed from a PC Amanda Houchen, was sent to 14 licensed premises.

It explains how glass bottles were used as projectiles and as a result officers have asked that the bottles be dispensed into polycarbonate containers.

However, the request has not been met with appreciation by some landlords.

John Brown, of Brownies Bar in Anlaby Road, west Hull, said: "I feel like we are being persecuted by the police. It is ridiculous.

"Anyone who wants to get hold of bottles for those purposes can do so quite easily by buying them from any number of off-licences in the area.

"All the time I feel like the pubs are being penalised unfairly. I have worked hard to build my business up and the police are making it harder for me."
