To celebrate the investment, the Lord Mayor of Hull, Councillor Danny Brown, and principal of nearby Wilberforce College, David Cooper, will perform a ribbon-cutting ceremony next Monday.

They will be joined by store manager Russell Freakes and the college will receive a £200 donation and a Nintendo Wii for the its common room.

Mr Freakes said: "The Co-operative is a community retailer and we are committed to playing a real role in local life.

"It is fantastic that the Lord Mayor and local college can join us to share our special day.

"Our stores provide an ideal location for people to shop locally.

"It is important to all the members of staff here that we meet people's needs and we are all looking forward to welcoming our new customers."

The store will offer extensive ranges of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as higher welfare meat and fish.

As the leading supermarket supporter of Fairtrade foods, the company's extensive Fairtrade range will also be on offer.

Residents have welcomed news of the store opening and say it will be well used.

Shirley Brooks and husband Stephen live in nearby St Bartholomews Way.

Mrs Brooks said: "We'll definitely use it for essential items and, although there is an Asda nearby, it's nice to have a bit of variety.

"It's great that The Co-operative have built the new store and are making the most of the site.

"I've been trying to find out for a while when it would be open.

"We'll be having a wander down to the shop to see what it has to offer."

“Looks like part of it was built into the pub car park, must have made the brewery a good offer to buy some of their land, smart business as well opening up opposite the college, i'm sure their cafeteria will either need to reduce their prices or end up being closed!”

“At least it's not another Tesco. The Co-op still have membership. Anyone can join and you can also become part of its Community Fund which has local representatives at the core of its venture. It may be a nationwide business but it cares for its local population too.”

“This was in the 'Holderness Road - down your street' section of the HDM. It is in fact Saltshouse Road, so not too good on geography. Having recently moved from Western Gailes Way, I can tell you that this store most certainly was not wanted. There is already traffic problems, difficulty getting out of the road, without an increase in cars coming onto the estate. Glad I'm out of it!!”

“A great deal of the residents around the new Co op are elderly and I am sure they will be very happy with the convenience of it. There is also a lovely new housing area on Westerngales Road and a new one will be built on the old Princess Royal site, so I can't see a downside. This is typical of Hull folk lately, stop being so miserable, some of you are never happy unless you have something to wine about.”
