The party now has a seven-seat majority at the Guildhall.
It's the first time the Lib Dems have managed to establish clear breathing space between themselves and the other parties.

With no elections next year, the main opposition Labour group will have to wait until 2010 before attempting a comeback.
Lib Dem leader Councillor Carl Minns said: “This result gives us the mandate to make the big decisions.
“It's a big challenge but the people of Hull have put their trust in us and now we have to repay that trust.”
The Lib Dems gained seats by ousting sitting Independent councillors in Beverley, Boothferry and Derringham wards.
They also won in Newington and Pickering, two wards previously held by Labour.
Labour's only gain of the night came in St Andrew's, where Daren Hale defeated sitting Independent Albert Penna.
In Myton, former Labour leader Colin Inglis won an expected easy victory to return to the council after a 12-month absence.
The overall turnout was 25.5 per cent - down nearly four cent on last year.
