Hull mum fined over sausage roll

07:00 - 24-April-2008

A MOTHER was fined £75 for littering after a “bite-sized” piece of sausage roll missed her daughter's mouth and fell on the ground.

Sarah Davies was trying to pop the pastry snack into four-year-old Chloe's mouth when it fell onto the pavement outside Hull Central Library.

Hull City Council confirmed a fixed penalty ticket had been issued by a member of its Environment Crime Unit.

Miss Davies, of Beverley Road, Hull, said: “Where is the common sense? It was a small, bite-sized piece - just big enough for her mouth.

“I went back to take a picture of the 'litter', but it had been gobbled by pigeons. There was no litter there at all.”

She said after the food fell on the ground, two council workers approached her. One said she was being fined for dropping litter.

“He asked me for my name and address but I refused to give it. He then said he was going to call the police who would arrest me,” she said.

“It made me feel really little.”

Eventually, Miss Davies gave him her name and was told she would receive a letter from Hull City Council in the next few days.

She said: “I agree that people should not drop litter, but I was not dropping litter.”

A spokeswoman for Hull City Council said: “The issuing of the fixed penalty notice is the result of the mother's actions and not as a result of child's.”
