Shock at Prescott's bulimia battle

07:00 - 21-April-2008

SENIOR Labour figures in Hull today said they were shocked by former Deputy Prime MinisterJohn Prescott's revelation he has suffered from bulimia.

The Hull East MP revealed in a national newspaper yesterday how he would gorge himself on food and then force himself to be sick when he became stressed.

Karl Turner, who was recently selected to succeed Mr Prescott as Labour's next parliamentary candidate in Hull East, said: “I'm shocked at the news to be honest, gobsmacked in fact.”

Councillor Steve Brady, leader of the opposition Labour group on Hull City Council, said: “I'm very surprised.

“He certainly hasn't shared this with anyone I know.”

Val Hunter, of Support And Empathy For People With Eating Disorders (Seed), said Mr Prescott should be admired for what he has done.

She said it could prompt more men to seek help in the future.

Mrs Hunter told the Mail: “It will have been very difficult, even worse than having anorexia, as most people find sick such a revolting thing and are more disgusted with it than by people just not eating.

Mr Prescott details his battle with bulimia in his memoirs, which are being serialised.

He said: “I've never confessed it before. Out of shame, I suppose, or embarrassment or just because it's such a strange thing for someone like me to confess to.

Mr Prescott, who resigned as Deputy Prime Minister last June and will retire as an MP at the next election, says he recovered from the illness more than a year ago.
