Turner's bid for history books

If the 37-year-old wins the seat at the next General Election he will become the first Hull-born MP to represent the city since William Wilberforce.
As yet, however, he’s far from being a household name in a constituency where John Prescott has been a dominating figure for almost 40 years.
The former Bransholme High School pupil’s CV is not typical of most Westminster-based politicians.
He left school at 16 with few qualifications and dabbled in antique dealing before deciding to study law as a mature student at the University of Hull.
After going on to Bar school, he was a barrister in 2005 and currently practises criminal law for the Max Gold Partnership in Hull.
His politics were shaped by his father, Ken, a lifelong Labour stalwart and former full-time official for the National Union of Seamen.
For many years, his father has also been one of Mr Prescott’s closest friends.
When the scandal over the MP’s relationship with his diary secretary Tracy Temple erupted two $ago, Mr Turner senior was on hand to chauffeur Mr Prescott past waiting cameras outside his home in Sutton.
However, the Mail understands relations between the families have been strained during the selection campaign because of their divided loyalties.
Mr Prescott’s son, David, who finished third in the contest, issued a statement afterwards that conspicuously failed to mention Karl Turner by name.
“I give my full backing to the winning candidate and hope he will build a mass membership party, support our candidates in the forthcoming local election, win back the council for Labour and retain the seat at the next General Election,” he said.
Mr Turner secured victory with 85 votes at a Labour Hull East constituency meeting attended by 170 members at the Freedom Centre in Preston Road, east Hull, at the weekend.
