£1k raised for great cause
For many years the Perth Street Club, just off Chanterlands Avenue in west Hull, has been a real community venue, which has been ran by manager Joan and Paul Moore.
The place was very busy when I played there last Saturday, with several birthdays being celebrated by its members, and recently a fundraising target was reached through the culmination of a series of events.

A cheque for more than £1,000 was presented to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service and a big thank-you goes to all of the members and staff for supporting the various functions, raffles and fundraising efforts held at the club over the past year.

I CALLED in at the New Cleveland Club in Cleveland Street last week for their Thursday night country club.
Although the night has only been running for just over a year it is has become a regular venue on the country music calendar. Resident country music performer is the legendary Alf Berry, who works hard to keep things running smoothly for the line-dancers and listeners and, each week, he is joined by guest performers.
Entry is free.
I WAS saddened to hear guitarist and singer Albert Barley passed away last week following a courageous fight against cancer. He performed under the stage name of Al Cortez and had many friends on the entertainment scene. Albert was originally part of the Skysounds group during the 1960s and later he went on to feature in duos with some of the well-known faces in the area, including Rena Jordan, Dr Jive and, for many happy years, with Dave Montana in the Montana Brothers.
Al worked all over the UK and also did summer seasonal work on Hayling Island during the 1970s and 1980s, having some wonderful times out on the road.
Condolences to all his family and friends, he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
GIGS of note this week include the rock band Little Kings at the Crown in Holderness Road, east Hull, on Friday night; Kathy Parr is the Hessle Ex- Servicemen's Club, Hull Road, Hessle, on Saturday night and on Sunday night Zara is singing at the New Walton Club in Walton Street, west Hull.
