When fully operational, it will be the largest producer of bioethanol in the UK, converting huge volumes of locally-grown wheat into fuel and animal feed.

Managing director Dave Richards said: "Vivergo Fuels was formed in 2007 as a biorefinery for the future.

"As a joint venture between AB Sugar, BP and DuPont, this business will help deliver about a third of the UK's forecast bioethanol demand once fully operational.

"Our business will play a vital role in the production of sustainable, UK-sourced food and fuel."

The plant is also one of the biggest of its type in Europe, capable of producing 420m litres of fuel a year once in full production mode.

It will also be the UK's largest single source supplier of animal feed, producing 500,000 tonnes each year.

Mr Richards said the refinery had been designed to process 1.1m tonnes of feed-grade wheat every year, without waste by-products.

Mr Richards said: "Vivergo's bioethanol will offer greenhouse gas savings in excess of 50 per cent over standard petrol, the equivalent of removing 180,000 cars from the road.

"The animal feed production will also provide the daily protein requirement for 340,000 dairy cows, which represents almost 20 per cent of the national dairy herd.

"As such, Vivergo Fuels represents the first major renewable energy investment in the Humber region.

"It is an investment that has created and is sustaining over 1,000 jobs regionally and nationally."

“So the fuel it produces will reduce greenhouse gasses. Apparrently its like taking 180,000 cars off the road. The actual quote is as follows: -

"Vivergo's bioethanol will offer greenhouse gas savings in excess of 50 per cent over standard petrol, the equivalent of removing 180,000 cars from the road."

However this plant also produces enough animal feed to feed 350,000 cows which if my memory serves me well means that although it will in effect remove 180,000 cars from the road, it is also feeding one of the worst culprits for greenhouse gases in the world.

    Talk about spin.”

“The bioethanol production will be supplied by UK feed wheat, plus imports and once all three plants are up and running the UK for the first time will become an importer of wheat instead of an exporter, which is not necessarily a good thing.

The bioethanol will be used as an additive to "bulk-out" petrol fuels to meet EU guidelines; usually these fuels are the standard non-premium brands sold on the supermarket forecourts. However, not all cars are set up to burn ethanol diluted fuels and assessment as to whether this will result in increased "pinking" [as far as I can tell] has not yet been reported on.

“What's wrong with asking how many jobs this plant supports - will it be a major employer in Hull. Is the information classified!”

“why are people so negative? 2 of the 3 companies are UK based and are providing jobs and innovation in the area. Surely better than subsidising a german company to the tune of £100M so they can build a final assembly line in Hull and squirrel away the profits back to Germany. Yes it has taken longer than expected, but they obviously stuck to their guns and refused to be held to ransom by subcontractors.
I believe the crop comes from Lincolnshire, but think its sugar beat, not wheat, hence the involvement of AB Sugar.
Smile, you have the countries biggest alcohol factory on your doorstep”

“Go on dont be shy tell us how many local full time jobs this plant has created - 50 a 100? Do we have to import the wheat?”

“But will it give us cheaper fuel or just another opportunity for the green company to exploit more profits from us, the consumer. Whilst I am on about this company who's name must stand for ""Ballooned Prices'' can anyone explain to me why most of the green garages in Hull are charging 3p a litre more for diesel than the one on the A63 and it's been like that for the last 3 weeks and it was 4p per litre more up until a few days ago. Come on HDM, do some real reporting and investigate why this is happening. I currently fill up at Total at £1.38 per litre and the green garages are £1.42.

I personally try and boycott the green garages and fill up elsewhere. The other month I filled up at one of these which will remain nameless but it is close to the refinery and got 85 miles to £25.00 before I had to fill up again. Normally I get 140 miles to 25.00. I did think my fuel guage hadn't gone up much. My wife has noticed the same and no longer fills up here.”
