THEY have had a miserable start to the new year.

Residents in Burton Fleming have been battling flooding since before Christmas.

With water levels finally dropping, some are only now discovering the full extent of the damage.

With parts of the village, near Bridlington, under water for two weeks, it has certainly been a testing time for residents.

But the shining light during this difficult fortnight has been the community spirit villagers have shown.

People have offered their homes to those affected by the flooding.

Fire crews desperately trying to pump the water away have been offered hot drinks and meals.

Parish Councillor Keith Wells claims in the 60 years he has lived there he has never seen community spirit like it.

It is similar to 2007, when devastating flooding across East Yorkshire brought out the best in so many.

Then, as now in Burton Fleming, people rallied round to help those in need.

They have shown commendable spirit and the community is likely to be stronger for it when all of this is over.

Hopefully, they won't ever have to go through anything like this again.
