'No real reason' to take up setts, says Civic Society
BEVERLEY Civic Society has hit out at the decision to press ahead with removing stone setts from Saturday Market.
East Riding Council is about to deliver its £2.5m scheme.
-

divided opinion: Stone setts in Saturday Market, Beverley.
It had asked for consultation and been told by the Civic Society the setts should stay.
But when work starts in two months' time, they will be taken up. Some of the setts will be retained for reuse in some limited areas of Saturday Market.

Civic Society chairman Sandy Patience said: "There's no real reason to take them up. They're a feature of Saturday Market and a feature of the town.
"This is not a very good compromise."
Councillor Stephen Parnaby, leader of East Riding Council, said: "While there had been support for retaining the setts, there had also been a strong view, particularly from disabled users, that the setts should be removed. After further discussions during the public consultation, it has been agreed that some will be retained for reuse at the entrance of Old Waste, the ends of the parking areas in the centre of Saturday Market and an area off Ladygate."
