Some 35 years after its big screen debut, Grease shows no signs of encroaching middle age.

This latest touring version of the 50s-set musical – following the developing love between two high school students, Danny and Sandy – is as exuberant as a frat party.

But amid the pyrotechnics – including bursts of flame and a lighting scheme as gaudily bright as pack of bubble-gum – are some finely judged performances.

A stand-out is Danny Bayne as the swaggering Danny – the role made famous by John Travolta. The young actor gives a sense of the vulnerability beneath the character's strut, turning to mush each time his beloved hoves into view.
