It's all going downhill

Downhill lies are easy to combat if you know the basics

Downhill lies
Karl Worby, professional at Skidby Lakes Golf Club, in Woodhill Way, Cottingham, said: "The downhill lie shot is extremely difficult because the ball is below the normal stance level.
"This shot is hardto executre and demands a high livel of concentration while the tendancies are to make push or push-fade the shot or, alternatively, "top" it completely.
"A push or push-fade shot is mainly a result of not squaring the clubface properly during the stroke. This is caused because it is difficult to produce a full club rotation while trying to follow the slope of the terrain.
"Gravity will also encourage the swing centre ahead of the ball adding to the tendancy to push or slice."
Below are some tips to make this shot a little easier to execute:
1. Play the ball slightly back in the stance.

2. Set up perpendicular to the ground but resist being pulled down the hill past the ball.

3. Tilt the shoulders as much as possible to match the lie of the land and make it easier to stay with the shot. It helps if you sit more on the right knee.
4. Make sure you allow for the club being somewhat de-lofted cuasing the ball to go lower and roll further. It is sometimes better to have a three-quarter swing with a steady head position and take the same club as normal.
5. Aim to the left, depending how much of a slope there is.

6. Always take one or two practice swings until you feel comfortable before making a controlled swing following the level of the ground.
