'It's time to stop messing about'
Frank Southward of Hornsea on why the Floral Hall must be rebuilt on a different site
Regardless of what future purpose the existing Floral Hall site is eventually used for, the East Riding Council cabinet has chosen the most logical and suitable place to build this new community entertainment, leisure facility.
-
Hornsea's Floral Hall
The new building is going to cost several million pounds. The only way such a large investment can be justified is for this to be built in the central sea front area where it can be seen and accessed by more people.
There is nearby parking for more than 200 vehicles, administration will be more economical and security should be easy to maintain.
The old Floral Hall is in an area that has seen better days. The site is out of the way and not easily reached. There is very limited parking, indeed there is only hard standing provision for 30 cars, but for normal weekly use this has been adequate.
The area was part of a "grand scheme" that had considerable potential about a century ago.
The Second World War, loss of the railway and a changed economy, probably put paid to any further realistic development.
One can understand and sympathise with the anxiety and concern being felt by the principle protagonist against any change, after all his property overlooks the existing Floral Hall site. He has had to live with this worry for a long time. However, I don't think he or any other residents should worry.
It is most unlikely their view will be lost or the area will become unsightly. On the contrary, the likelihood is that removal of that ugly building will immediately improve the area and their property values.
The reluctance of the short-sighted town council and their domination of "Let's Go Hornsea" who together are always screaming "foul" is likely to have already done a great deal of harm.
Their intransigence could result in Yorkshire-Forward thinking twice about how much money Hornsea truly merits for its new hall facility.
The present economic situation and the belligerent attitude taken by our Town Council could leave the funding for the new hall short by a couple of million pounds.
It is time the council stopped messing about. We, the people of Hornsea, need the best for our town. We do not want a cheaper, "smaller facility".
It is time for "The Hornsea Awkward Brigade" to stop messing about!

“I think it is about time they moved the Floral Hall, I live on the Esplanade and at weekends the noise and vandalism from the drunks that poor out of the hall in the early hours will give us some peace I hope. our cars are damgaged and beer glases are left in our gardens and surprise surprise no POLICE around as usual......
I have only lived in Hornsea for 5 years but boy! the town needs to get into the 21st Centuary and let other businesses come into town and maybe Hornsea wouldnt be so drab............”

“Yes Frank you are right.............
I've been away for a while.
Now back home, I'm surprised to see this is still not resolved.
I understand that East Yorkshire Council made the decision about three (3) years ago.
It's surely time for them to stop messing about??????
WHY don't ERYC get on with it.???

“YORKSHIRE FORWARD ???
So the weasels have unearthed something that does not appear to be to ERYC's credit.
They deserve some applause for that.
If Yorkshire Forward made no stipulations in regard to what would merit funding as ERYC claimed.
Then I hope that ERYC is embarrassed and chastened by these revelations.
However I've been around for long enough to have learned that the truth could be confused by the many ambiguities that developed as a result of the Hornsea Council led,--- 'Let's Go Hornsea',--- Floral Hall Campaign.
The truth may have become impossible to resolve.
HOWEVER: As Frank said;
Regardless of what future purpose the Floral Hall site is eventually used for, the East Riding Council Cabinet did choose the most logical and suitable place to build this new community entertainment, leisure facility.

It's high time that Hornsea was given some idea of how the plans are developing...........When are we going to see something?

“A message from inside the 'cosy club' from the devil's advocate:
Much of what you write is just empty meaningless rhetoric.
QUOTE:
"OK let the park go" - "Let the New Hall be built where ERYC wants it" - "Let more speed bumps, limits and restrictions come" - "Soon wont even be allowed to complain" - "Come on Big Brother".........................
Like I said, Just empty rhetoric.
I don't think you addressed a single point I made.
You might get a pat on the back from your buddies for that sort of 'twaddle' and maybe it passes as debate in the council chamber,.......but it is just empty rhetoric.
****Never bother to read the minutes ?.............TRUE you got me there!
****Never bother to attend meetings ?....TRUE....However I did occasionally attend. The last time was in 2004.
(I wrote a confidential report of that experience) (I would have preferred not to mention this but your statement is a challenge)
To avoid unnecessary embarrassment I chose to alter a name.
The last time I asked a question .......Mr E****** took control, I have noticed before that he is an irascible man, given to saying things in a very forceful way regardless of the effect this might have on the questioner.
It was my misfortune that he didn't like my question. I can recall more than one occasion when he's torn a strip off a questioner during the councils "public participation time.
I think his intimidating manner may well deter ordinary members of the public from wishing to attend council meetings.
( Though he is not alone in presuming criticism where none is intended. )
Attending this meeting turned out to be a very unpleasant and humiliating experience.
Mr E****** seemed to frequently indulge himself in a show of exasperation and bad temper. It is not a good thing to see a councillor making himself unapproachable by being offensive and unnecessarily critical of other opinions or views.
At the end of the meeting
Mr E****** came across to me and apologised for his outburst. I made it quite clear to him that I was both annoyed and offended. To which he apologised again.
Following this we had a short general sort of conversation with no ill feelings.
I still bear no ill will . I really don't think badly of him but he does not seem to think that he could ever be wrong.
However if he still behaves as he did, then he may still deter people from attending meetings. ( I hope that since 2004 he has mellowed a little )
Does he still want to abolish ERYC ? Do the rest of Hornsea Town Council agree with him ? ....................Stand well away if you dare to tell him you don't agree!”

“Well Thomas got that off his chest.
Shame really that most of the whingers and critics never bother to attend council meetings, never read the minutes - available on line or in fact even bother to vote most of the time.
If you only knew how hard your councillors fought for your town, how often they asked to see 'definite' plans how often they went the extra mile to protect what many of you would give away for the sake of your cars or another cafe.
Think for goodness sake..
They do, often, their time is given free, not even 'expenses', an empty public gallery at most meetings, rarely any questions from the floor. Certainly no thanks, and less than 35% of the town bothered to vote last time.
OK let the park go, let the new hall be built where ERYC wants it, let more speed bumps, limits and restrictions come - soon you wont even be allowed to complain - come on, bring on Big Brother, the jackboot and then the heavy hand.
Is that what you really want or will you get behind those who are trying and stop being so B selfish.
Once we had wheelrights and Blacksmiths. Now we have garages and tyre specialists - things change, you must change or suffer the consequences.
The Consequences are what Hornsea is now - do you want it to get worse or will you come into the 21st C.
thats got it off my chest to all the moaning minnies - go and do something positive.”

“Hopefully plans will soon be available for us to get a glimpse of what the New Entertainment Hall will look like.
Hornsea is privileged to be found worthy of this £6+m. investment. Far in excess of anything that a town of our size could normally expect.
No other similar town will have a comparable facility.
I hope, that when the plans and sketches are eventually received, they will be given proper consideration, rather than the usual churlish reaction that is normal from our town council............It really is time to move on.........Amen to that.
*This Town Council seems to be determined to run this precious town of ours into complete dereliction.
*The first Ispace proposal was never given any encouragement.
*The belligerent unhelpful attitude from our town council eventually made Ispace 'throw in the towel'.
From an outsiders view (and we were never allowed to see what was going on) it seemed that our town council were at no time willing to enter into a meaningful dialogue with Ispace.
*We needed our council to openly discuss the benefits that the Ispace proposals could bring to the town, and they would not do that.
It was as if our council had decided that, whatever decisions they took had nothing to do with the people who live here.
*One of our councillors, wants rid of the ERYC because he claims that they don't listen to him. Most of the people in the town were in favour of the Ispace ideas but he didn't listen to them.
*Parking in the town centre is, and remains a major problem.
Clearly in order for the town to have benefited from the increased retail provision that the Ispace proposal could have brought, it was going to be necessary for an adjacent area of the Park to be made available for car parking.
This would not have had the cataclysmic effect that some of our councillors claimed and there was very generous recompense on offer from Ispace.
*The only way to ensure the economic future of our town centre, was, and is to come to terms with the fact that a reasonable area of the Park should be made available for 'short stay parking'
*If the Ispace proposal had gone ahead, then by now there would have been a consolidated retail area that could have met most of the shopping requirements in the Town.
The Town Councils first objections to the proposals were to do with delivery lorries having access, and last of all they complained that Ispace didn't provide detailed plans.......Can you imagine the expense and time required to meet this demand , when there was every likelihood that the council would again find new objections
*Our Town Park is an enormous privilege for the people who live here and most of us are aware of that.
Any decision about its future use needs to be very, very, very carefully considered.
Only the obtuse would have refused to give careful consideration to the Ispace scheme, when the benefits could have been so great.
*Ownership of this land came to Hornsea Town Council 90 years ago.
If such a golden opportunity were to have been offered to this present Council, it's likely that they would have refused it: Why? Simply, because they are a different mix of people, and unfortunately for Hornsea they appear to lack the foresight of their predecessors.
Seeing that the Ispace project didn't get the go ahead, then there is no reason why the new Tesco supermarket should not be a great success, especially for TESCO.
Everyone who would normally shop outside the town will benefit by at least £5 weekly in not having to travel.
***The new TESCO store will have a more profound effect on Hornsea than any other event over the last 50 years
Due to their lack of foresight the town Council will now have to come to terms with most of the retail activity, moving away from the centre of the town.
The council will have no say in this and no influence. They missed their 'Big Chance' for the town when they were too blind to see the advantages that could h”
