A HUMBER area travel operator is bidding to take the financial sting out of half-term breaks in the sun with a school holiday sale.

jetXtra.com has launched a timetable of return flights from Humberside Airport to Alicante and Majorca, which are set to take off from May.

The fledgling company is offering return fares from £250, including bags "and no hidden extras", in a move it hopes will make it stand out from its more established rivals.

Eye-watering price hikes on flights and getaways during school holidays has long been a thorny issue for parents and teachers, and rising fares has prompted many to take their children out of school during term time, often receiving a slap on the wrist or even fines from the local authority as a result.

jetXtra managing director Daniel Reilly said: "We are a new company so we are trying to be different so we can get people's attention and get our brand out there.

"Having worked in the industry for many years, one of the main issues I've seen coming to a head recently is how parents are getting sick and tired of being ripped off by travel companies.

"It has reached a point where we are seeing parents taken to court because they have removed their children from school, to avoid the huge price increases during the school holidays.

"We are already offering fares with no hidden extras and a baggage allowance of 20kg as part of our desire to offer transparency for the customer.

"The school holiday sale is an extension of this and we hope we can help both local parents and schools, not to mention teachers, pick up lower cost holidays this summer from Humberside."

Last year, jetXtra became locked in a David and Goliath battle over its proposed services from the regional airport.

After announcing plans to launch low-cost flights to Majorca and Malaga from June last year, major leisure airline Jet2 threatened legal action against the fledgling low-cost operator.

The dispute centred around the name "jet", and put a spanner in the works of jetXtra's plans to take off from Humberside last year.

However, jetXtra.com has now retained its title and received regulatory approval to begin operating by the Government's Civil Aviation Authority.

Now, after working with Humberside Airport to establish which routes would be viable, jetXtra is launching flights to the Costa Blanca and Majorca, starting from May 28.
