Mum-of-five Liz Wainwright was a thoroughly deserving candidate for a Femail makeover, according to her aunt, who nominated her.

Ann Moffat told us: "Liz is 45 and has five lovely children. Her husband, Patrick, is a poorly person with a debilitating disease that is getting worse all the time.

"Liz is an extremely caring person, both to fellow humans and defenceless animals.

"She is an excellent bagpiper and plays other musical instruments, as do all her family. They pipe at many events in Hull and in Liz's home town of Hessle – most of it for charity or simply to entertain."

Mrs Moffat also told us: "Liz has spent a lot of time helping at the local school to encourage the pupils with their music.

"She has lately been having to study as she most likely will have to become the breadwinner, if Patrick can no longer work (he is a pyschiatric nurse working within the community).

"As is the norm, she is always busy but when anyone asks for help, she is always willing."

When Femail first tried to contact Liz to tell her about her surprise makeover, she was out on a caring mission again – her mum had recently had a stroke.

Liz, of Pulcroft Avenue, Hessle, said it was always her aim to help everyone – and everything – out when she could.

As well as supporting her husband, who has a condition similar to multiple sclerosis – "it's called Charcot-Marie-Tooth Syndrome and it means he has difficulty walking and falls a lot" – Liz said she was always welcoming "waifs and strays" into her world.

They currently include a disabled pigeon – "he can't walk, we have had him about two-and- a-half years"; a rescued homing pigeon that didn't make it back; an orphaned duck and some occasional guests in the shape of rescued battery hens.

"I've got a rescue dog and a pony, a gypsy cob, who was heading for the meat market.

"I look after everyone's pets when they are away on holiday – and I've got five children, three of them teenagers."

Liz was delighted to have been put forward by her aunt for her makeover.

"I tend to go and get my hair cut when I can't see anymore, and I'm always in jeans or jodhpurs and wellies or walking boots. I don't ever get to wear heels."

Liz was treated to a new outfit courtesy of Matalan in Mount Pleasant, Hull, and a new hairstyle and make-up from staff at Colour Lounge in Carr Lane, Hull.

Colour Lounge stylist Kelley said: "When Liz came into the salon her hair was a dull brown shade with a bit of regrowth so we decided to warm it up with a few highlights through the top to complement her skin tone, and coloured the regrowth with a warm brown.

"We neatened up the ends of Liz's hair and cut some choppy layers in, and finished it by blow-drying using Kerastase Volume Mousse."

Sandra Collins, sales assistant at Matalan Mount Pleasant, said: "Liz was keen to get away from dark colours, she wanted to brighten herself up so she kept looking around the coloured clothing.

"She said she wanted something different, something she wouldn't normally wear but would feel good in.

"Liz chose a lovely selection of items including a lovely cream lacy dress and a purple dress."

Colour Lounge beauty therapist Stacey said: "Liz wanted a subtle look for daytime. We started with her eyes, applying a soft shimmer all over the area and then introduced cool colours to the outer corners of the eyes to complement Liz's outfit. The eyes were finished with eyeliner and mascara. Her foundation was matched to her skin-tone, adding bronzer and blusher. The look was finished with a shiny lip gloss."

"A lovely lady helped me with my clothes at Matalan – I never know what suits me. I got some nice blue 3/4 capri pants and a top.

"I also chose a nice body-warmer, which really suits my lifestyle and a purple tunic dress.

"I went out for a meal with my husband in some of my new things, as it was our wedding anniversary.

"It was the first time I'd had my hair professionally coloured and it was really nice to have that done. I had some blonde highlights in.

"They did a super job with my 'day' make-up, too.

"Everyone who looked after me was absolutely lovely – I really enjoyed my day. My children really like my change of hair style and my teenage girls were really excited to see my clothes."

Blue flowered Soon top, £16. Capri trousers, £12. Liz also chose a Falmer cream lacy dress, £18; blue leggings, £6; black leggings, £8; purple dress, £16; Falmer body- warmer, £25.

Liz decided to buy herself some matching pumps which she wore for her makeover shoot, and some jewellery.
