Scholars bring music to Beverley Minster

07:00 - 05-May-2008

The Renaissance men and women of the Tallis Scholars feel most at home in the Gothic grandeur of Beverley Minster, where they will be performing for the Beverley and East Riding Music Festival this month.

The Cambridge-based group, formed in 1973 by music graduate Peter Phillips and which performed a work by classical composer John Tavener, in 2000, with Sir Paul McCartney, will be bringing its brand of choral plainsong to the venue for the event.

Peter said: “Over the decades, certain memories stand out – including the New York concert and singing at the Sydney Opera House in front of 3,000 people – but it's places like the Minster, with its acoustics and atmosphere, that fits the music of the Renaissance perfectly.”

The choral group brings this ecclesiastical music, much of it written between the 15th and 17th centuries for the churches and cathedrals of Europe, to the building.

And among the acclaimed names in their repertoire, including Palestrina – the prolific 16th century Italian composer – is a work by a Beverley teenager .

Keryn Tatman, 17, a pupil at the town's Grammar School, won the festival's Young Composers' Competition, which was launched for the first time this year.

His piece, 'Stabat Mater' , was judged the winner by Peter – who said it showed a maturity, and a complexity, that far outweighed Keryn's years.

“It is very easy for a teenage composer to write an obvious piece of music – one which makes a good sound, “ Peter said.

“But there's a complexity in this piece which makes me think he has the makings of a real composer who will go on to bigger things.

“It was written well for the acoustics of the Minster – and it was no surprise to find that Keryn had been a chorister there.”

Keryn, who hopes to study music at Brunel University, said he was 'ecstatic' at the result.

“I absolutely love coming up with compositions and spend most of my free time composing for a range of styles and instruments,” he said.

“It will be an amazing experience to see the Tallis Scholars perform my piece in the Minster where I used to be a choirboy and, if anything, quite surreal.”

The Tallis Scholar's performance is one of the main events at the festival, which runs between Friday, May 23 and Monday, May 26 at churches across the East Riding.

The Tallis Scholars perform at the Beverley and East Riding Music Festival in Beverley Minster, Minster Yard North, Beverley. Friday, May 23, 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10-£20. Call (01904) 658338.
