SENIOR East Riding councillors have called for an end to a war of words over a new-look Floral Hall in Hornsea.

They say a full replacement for the current facility will only happen with external funding support from regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.

And they insist the agency is adamant that if funding is agreed, the new venue should be built next to the town's leisure centre.

Some campaigners in the resort continue to support the idea of redeveloping the existing Esplanade site.

But at a meeting of East Riding Council's cabinet, councillors called for people in the town to be realistic about the situation.

Councillor Jane Evison said: "This is not about the nasty East Riding, it's about us wanting to spend a lot of money to improve facilities, but we are not in a position to do that on the current site.

"If that is the deal on the table, we have got to go for it."

Councillors heard if the new hall got the go-ahead, the existing site would be used as a landscaped open space with limited extra car parking.

Cllr Evison said Yorkshire Forward required evidence of wider potential economic benefit to the town and the surrounding area before releasing any funds.

But she said it was clear the agency would only consider supporting any new development on a new site.

The East Riding Council has already earmarked slightly more than £2m towards the cost of the new development but latest estimates have put the likely cost at more than £6.6m.

Councillors agreed to start work preparing a planning application for the leisure centre site, but have reserved the right to revert to a smaller community centre scheme if extra funding was not made available before the end of next year.

“So the truth is out, we guessed as much but ERYC told a 'Porky' and it was repeated and then officially adopted by many senior officers and Councillors in Beverley.
Now its pay day. there is no excuse - if YOU are in the public domain, You make sure that whatever you say is fact, you check it out otherwise anyone can mislead/misdirect cand cheat an entire area.
You who didn't check the facts, pack your bags and go - we dont trust you anymore.
Parnaby, Menzies and Evison are ALL guilty... Resignations are expected by return.

This comes from ALL the residents of Hornsea..”

“Thank goodness for the internet. Where I can read the latest ERYC descrution plans of the Floral!
Leave the Floral where it belongs I say and invest the money it deserves.
I like many have witnessed the lack of care and investment of this historic building.
A new Floral!!! Come on you councillors of Hornsea earn the votes you got to represent the residents.
Don't let the incompitant east riding bullys have their way. Before you know it the town wont have a say on anything, if this latest consultation of Hornsea residents is to be used as an example!
Oh and by the way sack the present management.”

“Well done our kid, we are all behind you change is inevitable, but on our terms, not theirs. This new facility should be where ALL the age groups want it not just the recycled teenagers. and where it will bring most new jobs and enterprise.”

“Its a daft idea to build next to the sprts centre right on the sea front. where are the hundreds of patrons going to park ?. Why not build it on the existing site and add a car park at the side. please have some forward thinking and make Hornsea a place the young people will be proud of.”

“We don't actually need the rising sea levels. The site, chosen by the leaders, next to the Leisure Center FLOODS on a pretty regular basis.
However Hornsea residents please do not panic. The Lords of the East Riding Universe will hold back the tides and allow the residents to access the new Hall by canoe.
Thinking about it - canoe will be the only way in the summer as well because the car parks (reduced by the building of the new Hall) will be insuficient for purpose.”

“The words 'unity' & the 'East Riding Council' - in the same article???
I seem to remember that The Council said that there was no possibility of re building Bridlington's Spa without having a marina - last time I passed there was a nice new Spa but no marina!
This time in Hornsea they refuse to rebuild the Floral Hall on the same site but want to build it in the Car Park of the sports centre. Is this some councillors pet ego project or do we have to have new builds right next to the beach & rising sea levels?”

“Why move the Foral Hall it's been there for years, it's a land mark of Hornsea. People here don't want a new Foral Hall. There was plans a while ago for a new supermarket, flats and shops in Hornsea, great idea but it never happend because people here won't move with the times they don't like changes!”
