We are urging readers to be vigilant to protect badgers
FOLLOWING the recent arrest of eight men involving 13 terriers and one badger, near Howsham, York, we regret to say this is not an isolated incident.
Last week, in the space of just 30 minutes, East Yorkshire Badger Protection Group was informed of two badgers being found with horrendous slash injuries near Stamford Bridge.
These horrific injuries may not have been caused by vehicles.
If this wasn't distressing enough, another badger related incident followed.
In woodland on the outskirts of Selby, an area popular with dog walkers, an active badger sett has been dug.
Sadly, leaves and grass had previously been seen near the entrance, indicating the sett was preparing for cubs.
Those involved in this barbaric "pastime" know only too well a nursing sow will fight valiantly to protect her cubs.
Unfortunately, it is this same bravery which makes them more valuable to the badger diggers.
Groups of men, with working dogs, innocent though they may be, do not go unnoticed. Readers may remember the incident at Sunk Island last year.
So could we urge readers who know of a badger sett to please, please be vigilant; ring the police immediately if you see any suspicious activity near a known badger sett. Make it clear to the police this may be a wildlife crime.
Do not tackle these people yourself. If you can, give the exact location, take down car registrations, number of men, types of dogs.
If a lactating sow is taken at this time of year, not only will she suffer an unimaginable cruel death, but so too, will her babies. It is only with the help and vigilance of members of the public that we can stop these barbaric and nauseating crimes.
Ann Farrar-Coates,
East Yorkshire Badger Protection Group.
