Two more wind farm firms set to follow Siemens to Humber region
AT LEAST two more major wind turbine manufacturers are likely to follow Siemens to the Humber, the Mail understands.
It is believed another two companies will announce their preference for setting up factories in the region within the next 12 months.
-
Dawn of a new age: Experts predict two new wind farm manufacturers are set to come to the region following Siemens' decision to build an £80 million facility in Hull.
These will help fuel the 10,000 jobs expected to come to the region off the back of Siemens' decision.
The majority of these jobs will be in engineering and manufacturing.
This week the German manufacturer unveiled plans for an £80 million wind turbine factory on 130 acres of Associated British Port (ABP) land at Alexandra Dock in Hull.
As part of this project, ABP is to build a £100 milion riverside berth where the turbines will be loaded on to vessels for shipping out to huge wind farms earmarked for the North Sea.
Regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward, claims there are seven "credible" wind turbine manufacturers considering setting up in the UK and five of them have expressed an interest in the Humber.
Now one of them, Siemens, has confirmed its choice of Hull, renewable energy experts at the agency believe at least two of the remaining four companies will follow.
Andrew Fox, sector manager for environmental technologies at Yorkshire Forward, said: "We are assuming that the region will attract another couple of OEMs (original employment manufacturers) such as GE to the area.
"Those other two will be about half the size of Siemens."
Yorkshire Forward forecasts this will bring about 10,000 "direct employment" jobs to the region and gave a break down of these figures.
There will be 1,200 people employed at the Siemens factory and related businesses supplying the blades and towers for the turbines and assembling them ready for shipping.
The Mail tried to contact two potential turbine manufacturers, GE and Mitsubishi, for comment but no-one was available.
According to Yorkshire Forward, the two OEMs combined would be the same size as Siemens, so with their tower and blade manufacturers they would create another 1,200 jobs.
Under the plans, construction on the Siemens factory and riverside berth will start in early to mid-2012, creating several hundred construction jobs over an 18-month to two year period.

“I find it incredible that there are some people who have something negative to say about this wonderful news. It is exactly that kind of attitude that has put Hull down for so long. Finally we have a real chance to pull ourselves upwards and what can we hear from some, doom gloom. There has to be something very wrong with anyone who spits in the face of prosperity. I am a well travelled aircraft engineer and you can take it from me, if you want to live a long life in a nice house in a decent, clean, exciting and safe place, then you had better pull your fingers out, earn those skills you will need and start contributing to the work that will need to be completed at that new Siemens site. Free tip - learn as much as you can about Siemens the company before you sit before them at your interview. The foreigners that some people seem to be afraid of will respect you for that. It may pay you to respect them too. They will after all be paying your wages and they didn't get to be world changers by being fools. If you don't want to get with it and put in the effort, then please stay out of it completely and keep your negativity to yourselves. Good luck Hull for the future!”

“Those people in the position to do so, and I suppose I am talking about training agencies and the like, should take a punt and start now to get youngsters up and running with the necessary skills.
I truly hope all this comes off, but we have had false dawns in the past, but if it does become a reality then what an opportunity for all, providing people get off their backsides and become proactive in their efforts to get a job.”

“Sadly thanks to this goverement many kids at school now will be unable to go to college nor university so all the skilled jobs will no doubt be filled by foreign workers, so in reality this good news is tainted by Cameron and co.”

“Some people just cannot see the writing on the wall, that this city is about to turn a corner very soon, and will see the dockland from salt end to the river hull start to thrive again just as it did in the past. The people of HULL, especially the young ones do not want to listen to doubters and defeatists or the NIMBY merchants among us who do not like noise and disruption or any kind of change that might spoil the view from their windows.”

“I think this is great news for the city and the kids coming through the school system looking for sustainable, well paid jobs in the area. One word of caution; the vast majority of these positions will be SKILLED positions - which will require a high standard of qualification. I am in the engineering industry and have had to travel the world to find the kind of jobs I wanted, The engineering field is becoming more and more technology based, which require Higher Education a relevant (Engineering) degree is the level employers are currently seeking - especially employers like Siemens and General Electric. Question; are the local kids getting the required level of education / training? As a certain Mr Bill Gates once commented "Nerds may not be cool - but one day you will end up working for them". It's a harsh world out there and simply living in the local area will not give anyone the right to a position within this project.I hope parents, pupils and educators understand the position and ensure they achieve the highest standards of education they can - unfortunately my experience of the Hull education system would, sadly, lead me to think this will not be the case.”

“Thank god there is something for the kids who are at school to look forward too. Instead of registering with crappy agencies, paying minimum wage. Well paid jobs will give this down trodden city the boost it needs. Then we can truly compete to be a top ten city.”

“I pray that this all comes true, I hope both sides of the Humber become successful and this really is the opportunity the young people of Hull, East Riding and N. Lincs need.”
